FAA grounds flights to Denver International Airport because of high winds

FAA officials ordered a ground stop on flights departing for Denver International Airport on Friday morning because of wind and airlines at DIA had delayed or canceled at least 319 flights.

The National Weather Service has issued high wind and red flag fire alerts, and forecasters have warned wind gusts west of metro Denver could reach speeds up to 100 miles per hour.

An FAA bulletin said “departures to Denver International are grounded due to wind,” adding that the chances this stop will be extended through Friday morning are greater than 60%. Flight arrivals to DIA were delayed for an average of 30 minutes due to wind, the FAA said.

DIA airlines reported 309 flights delayed and 10 canceled as of 9:40 a.m., according to the flight-tracking website FlightAware.

Travelers on Southwest Airlines faced 182 delays, United reported 57 delays, Skywest had 35, and Frontier had 13. Frontier had eight cancellations, and JetBlue had two.

This is a developing story.
