Man killed in Colorado gold mine elevator malfunction identified

A 46-year-old Teller County resident was killed when a mine elevator malfunctioned approximately 500 feet underground at a tourist attraction near Cripple Creek, sheriff’s officials said Friday.

Patrick Weier, an employee at Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine, died after an elevator equipment malfunction around noon Thursday, Teller County Sheriff Jason Mikesell announced at a briefing Friday.

Weier lived in the community and is survived by a 7-year-old child, Mikesell said.

The sheriff’s office is still investigating the incident and doesn’t yet know what caused the elevator to malfunction, Mikesell said.

Eleven people were rescued from the elevator shortly after it malfunctioned, and another 12 people were stuck 1,000 feet underground in the mine shaft for nearly seven hours Thursday.
