People are stealing copper wire near Denver’s Regional Transportation District track signals, switches and rail crossings, which is affecting light rail service and leading to train delays, RTD announced this week.
The theft has mostly occurred along the R Line between Peoria Station in Aurora and Lincoln Station in Lone Tree. The A Line has also been affected by the theft, which led to signal issues and RTD to use bus shuttles between Denver’s Union Station and Central Park Station, according to the news release.
“We’ve had a couple of other incidents where we’ve had some copper wire stolen,” said RTD spokeswoman Marta Sipeki. “Unfortunately we haven’t caught anyone yet.”
Similar copper wire thefts and rail disruptions took place in 2022, according to the news release.
