Patrons could not raise a beer, but still found a way to say goodbye to one of Steamboat’s most iconic bars

Longtime Tugboat Grill & Pub owner Larry Lamb describes a recent gathering in front his former business as more of a reunion than a protest.
On June 7, Lamb joined about 60 longtime Steamboat Springs residents who showed up to say farewell to the legendary watering hole built on Ski Time Drive in 1972. Some held signs, and a few offered kind words to memorialize the bar and restaurant that offered live music, a place to hang out with friends after a day on the slopes, or a chance to cut loose on the weekends.
“It was just the swan song,” Lamb said of the gathering. “I don’t know if it was an effort to bring attention or maybe just to just say, ‘Maybe we just want to roll over and quit because it looks like (they are going to tear it down) anyway, so let’s just have one last get-together.’”
Lamb admits he was a little surprised when police showed up at last week’s event to make sure the crowd complied with open-container laws, but Lamb said it did little to dampen the atmosphere surrounding the farewell.
