MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Justice Department has charged a man who squirted apple cider vinegar on Democratic U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar at an event in Minneapolis, according to court papers made public Thursday. Clustered inside a packed auction room in Denver, bidders at the National Western Stock Show set at least seven new records last week, including for both bids on top animals and the junior livestock auction’s overall sales, according to event officials. The top eight animals — including the Grand Champion Market Steer, which sold for $320,000 — collectively generated more than $822,000, according to a news release from the National Western Stock Show . That beats the old record for sales by the top-ranking animals by $185,000, stock show officials said in the release. Of the thousands of junior market animals that competed at the stock show in Denver this year, only 108 advanced to the auction, according to the release. The proceeds from the auction help fund the National Western Scholarship Trust , which supports education in agriculture and related fields. Fed raises key rate by quarter-point despite bank turmoil

By CHRISTOPHER RUGABER (AP Economics Writer) WASHINGTON (AP) — The Federal Reserve extended its year-long fight against high inflation Wednesday by raising its key interest rate by a quarter-point despite concerns that higher borrowing rates could worsen the turmoil that has gripped the banking system. “The U.S. banking system is sound and resilient,” the Fed said in a statement after its latest policy meeting ended. At the same time, the Fed warned that the upheaval stemming from the fall of two major banks is “likely to result in tighter credit conditions” and “weigh on economic activity, hiring and inflation.” The central bank also signaled that it’s likely nearing the end of its aggressive streak of rate hikes. In its statement, it removed language that had previously said it would keep raising rates at future meetings.
